My Favorite Things on the Internet This Week
Hello internet stranger,
The Weekly Click is a weekly (shocking, I know) updated list of interesting bits on the internet that I thought I’d share.
Happy clicking!
[Sorry I’m late. Family stuff.]
A couple of good blog posts about blogging: What happened to blogging for the hell of it? and Stop Giving af and Start Writing More. I’m doing some of what they are talking about on my new site: Containing Multitudes.
In Rebel Moon, director Zack Snyder answers the question — what if manic-pixie dream girls could also use weapons? The movie is split into two parts — A Child of Fire, which comes out on Netflix on December 22, and The Scargiver, released on April 19, 2024. The first full trailer for A Child of Fire is giving Red Dawn …in SPAAAAACE vibes. It also looks like an updated version of Battle Beyond the Stars, which is already a riff on The Seven Samurai.
Rolling Stone gets Gene Simmons to swear KISS is finished after their final show in December. Look, there will be one-off shows, in makeup, in the future. Maybe not in 2024 or 2025, but I can imagine a Vegas residency for sure.
This story about Fox Sports sideline reporter Charissa Thompson cracks me up: “I’ve said this before, so I haven’t been fired for saying it, but I’ll say it again. I would make up the report sometimes,” Thompson said in a recent interview.... Thompson, 41, added that she assumed that “no coach is going to get mad” if she misled viewers into thinking they had simply voiced some well-worn clichés, such as, “Hey, we need to stop hurting ourselves, we need to be better on third down, we need to stop turning the ball over and do a better job of getting off the field.” She’s getting heat for this, but let's be honest: she's right. Coaches never say anything at halftime worth listening to, so why not just randomly pick from a bingo card of cliches and go with it?
10 Positive Phrases Americans Find Cringiest in 2023. We finally took down our “Live, Laugh, Love” sign.
Two trends worth noting. Trump is starting to talk a lot more like Hitler. Trump campaign defends “vermin” speech amid fascist comparisons. And Trump’s authoritarian language is being matched by some very detailed and disturbing authoritarian plans. Behind the Curtain: Trump allies pre-screen loyalists for unprecedented power grab. J. Michael Straczynski on Harlan Ellison's Epic Sci-Fi Legacy. Great interview. I’m looking forward to seeing if I’ve read all the stories in the new collection. I bet not.
Rangers and Guardians, not Cardinals, reportedly could lose regional TV deals soon. When is after next season not considered soon? When the rights revert back to the St. Louis Cardinals, I hope they just decide to partner with Amazon or Apple to show every game.
Liu Cixin’s Three-Body Problem trilogy is getting the Netflix treatment. Between the teaser trailer and this 2-minute clip, I am cautiously optimistic.
The United States now experiences a "billion dollar" disaster event every three weeks. It was every four months in the 1980s. That seems bad. Is this bad? This is bad, isn’t it…
Which one is the brew that is true? The results of 4,000+ Americans tasting the same exact four coffees.
Pink is giving away 2,000 ‘banned’ books at Florida concerts. Love it.
The London skyline in 2030 if these 11 new towers get built. Interesting, but nothing looks iconic.
This is exciting (for me, at least): Warner Bros. Picks Up Alien Legion. Easily one of my favorite comic book series.
Perhaps you need a “What Could Go Wrong?” List.
It’s a well-written argument, but The Big Ten Suspending Jim Harbaugh Is Insane is wrong and it’s wrong because the author is a Michigan alum who is biased and admits it.
Cassandra De Pecol traveled to every country in the world as a solo traveler. Here are her top 10 favorites.
Starting in December, Disney will begin testing a new version of its streaming services by combining Hulu and Disney+ into a single app. I’m looking forward to the consolidation of streaming services. I expect in less than ten years, there will only be Netflix, Apple, Amazon, and Disney+.
Wil Wheaton on minding your business and not being a dick.
Here’s the newest Percy Jackson and the Olympians trailer. Looks good.
MLB owners approve Oakland Athletics' planned move to Las Vegas. I wish they’d change the name though. Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like that’s the plan.
Thanks for reading. If you like this potpourri of internet mélange and want to support it, forward it to someone who might like it, buy my books, or at the very least, let me know what you think. It is my hope you are enjoying my six-word stories or haiku here at the end.
Be seeing you.
